Stress Positive

Stress IS NEEDED in organisations. The challenge is to get the stress in the right places and to the right levels. However, you have a legal obligation to monitor and manage stress in your organisation.

If there is little or no stress in an organisation, people will be in a 'comfort zone' and be reluctant to change or strive to be excellent. The danger here is that the staff and the organisation stagnates.

If there is the right amount of stress, staff feel energised to reach and exceed agreed targets and challenges. The work rate is fast and sustainable.

Stress can be ultimately intolerable in cases such as:
  • increasing backlog of work
  • targets to achieve that are not controllable
  • lack of recognition for exceptional performance
  • conflicts of measures/targets
  • lack of knowledge on how to fulfil the job requirements
  • behavioural challenges with other key stakeholders
  • targets and measures change
  • targets are too top level or too detailed
  • Measures used are performance results rather than enablers

This is a fascinating area to review because it can transform performance and change the stress levels to the right balance

Stress guidelines

The opposing factor to wellbeing is stress. At SYSTEMIC we have been careful to cover the guidelines set out by the HSE (http://www.hse.gov.uk/stress/standards/index.htm).
